Google Chrome, Developing your Watcher

Posted on Sep 4th, 2008 by J~E~S~S : Living on Purpose J~E~S~S
I am busy with two other blogs now, but I can pass the content along right here. I've been testing Chrome, the new browser from Google.

Further reading on my experiences with Chrome: http://thepixellator.blogspot.com/2008/09/day-one-with-chrome.html
Including this new effect below. I copied the text from the blog and pasted it here but the text formatting remained the same as if it was still in the other blog. I cannot change it back to black from here in Gaia.

Google announced the beta launch of its new browser Chrome today. I downloaded it and looked at most of the sites I've designed. I'm pleased with the rendering of css and images. The look of the browser is streamlined, as it puts the tabs at the top of the window, then the address bar followed by the bookmarks bar, then it renders the page. I don't see a status bar.

Check it out yourself.
Google Chrome
Google Chrome is different from other browsers because you can use the address bar as both a search engine and an address bar. From my usability observations, most people unfamiliar with the web want to type their search terms in the address bar, anyway...or else they go to a search engine and type the web address in the search box! Chrome takes away that confusion and suggests search terms as you type. When you download and install it, the first question it will ask you is which search engine you want as a default. You're free to choose any search engine you want! (who said Google wanted to take over the world, anyway? Wasn't that Microsoft's old job?)

And here's the other blog:

Develop your watcher

All of us go through hard times, enough so that I believe one needs the difficult, stressful times in one’s life to push through to a new developmental level. If you are always in your comfort zone, there will be no impetus for change. Bill Harrris of Centerpointe teaches in his most recent blog post that to overcome your stressful situation, you need four things:

  • awareness
  • motivation
  • understanding of your mental processes
  • practice in watching them (develop your watcher)
How do you see how big the forest is when you’re in it? This is accomplished through awareness; and it’s like getting in a helicopter and flying over the forest. “Oooh,” you say, “I never knew it was this big! I never knew the trees were so large…” The trees are your mental processes. Don’t be afraid of them, don’t hate them!

This is one thing I would love to stress to young people, particularly teens, who don’t have a lot of experience in reading self-help materials. “You can hate your parents, or your siblings, or your teachers, but please, please, don’t hate your SELF!”

To see what I mean, rent the movie “What the bleep do we know?“. There is a scene where the main character, a female who is struggling with thoughts of self-hatred and with the awful memories of her spouse committing adultry, finally has an a-ha moment of self-acceptance. She begins to draw hearts on herself with lipstick, she releases her self-hatred and finally accepts herself, so her world changes and she finally feels content again.

So watch the way your mind works, and notice if your intentions actually influence your day. Make an experiment of it. Once you discover something about yourself that you never knew, it’s like a window opening to let in fresh air! Now you have the power to either indulge in your old behavior or come up with a new response! Will you hate yourself, or accept yourself?

Stop to breathe

Posted on Sep 15th, 2008 by J~E~S~S : Living on Purpose J~E~S~S
I stepped outside my home office, into my front yard today. My head was swirling with the things I still had to do. My two year old son came outside, too. I looked up and witnessed birds "sailing", soaring, or gliding, whatever it is that they do. It was a moment of peace. Even now, husband calls, urging me to go to bed and get some rest.

I've never seen those birds behave that way over my house. Usually there is a flock of geese, all going one direction in formation. Occasionally a crow caws his superiority over the other residents of the neighborhood. But these birds; there were over ten of them, all different types, were riding some current, making circles and doing acrobatic-like moves.

It was a moment of peace.

I said, "Look, see the birds!" to my son. He looked up and became as transfixed as I was.

One minute, one minute and a half passed

Then we went inside to begin cooking dinner. And helping the older one with homework. And this, and that, and this...and now I hear the call, "Stop now! Time for bed..." But I didn't get to finish!

Boiling blood and Mercury retrograde

Posted on Sep 25th, 2008 by J~E~S~S : Living on Purpose J~E~S~S
Thanks to Meenakshi for pointing out this web site and the fact that Mercury has gone into Retrograde. I had asked her, "Retro-what?" because I don't normally follow astrology. http://www.astrologycom.com/mercret.html

Mercury retrograde gives rise to personal misunderstandings; flawed, disrupted, or delayed communications, negotiations and trade; glitches and breakdowns with phones, computers, cars, buses, and trains. And all of these problems usually arise because some crucial piece of information, or component, has gone astray or awry.

It is therefore not wise to make important decisions while Mercury is retrograde, since it is very likely that these decisions will be clouded by misinformation, poor communication and careless thinking. Mercury is all about mental clarity and the power of the mind, so when Mercury is retrograde these intellectual characteristics tend to be less acute than usual, as the critical faculties are dimmed. Make sure you pay attention to the small print!

No wonder I'm not blogging these days! Yesterday was the day the retrograde started, and I began looking for my purse in the morning because I needed to accompany an older stepson to court. Both my personal cell phone and the business cell phone, and my ID were in that purse, and it had gone missing! I went to court without it and it turned out I never needed my ID anyway.

I had taken a dance class the night before, and that must be where my purse was! I called the studio at 10 am, and left a message. Their web site said classes don't start until 4:30. Geez, my life is locked in that studio! My business cell phone, wallet, checkbook, etc. I called again at 4 pm and she answered, "yes, I have your purse, and I tried to call you last night after I looked you up in the white pages but nobody answered." (yeah, that would be because nobody answers the phone at home because it's a fax line.) There were 15 missed calls on the business cell that was trapped in my purse, but most of those were me calling myself hoping against hope that I would find my purse under the couch. I couldn't check messages because the cell phone company suspended us....embarrassing.

So I think maybe I better start paying attention to astrology. I can blame it all on the stars.

Later that night, husband and I entered a conversation that ended up being an argument over issues long buried. That rarely happens with us these days. I had thought our arguing days were over! "But everybody has blood," husband says, "and sometimes our blood boils."
